What it is

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 amends the existing Consumer Rights Directive and adds, among other things, rules on the electronic withdrawal process for online contracts.

Key changes

  • Electronic withdrawal function: Merchants must provide consumers with an electronic option to declare their withdrawal.
  • Confirmation of receipt: Receipt of the withdrawal must be confirmed (e.g. via email).
  • Deadline: National transposition by 19 June 2026.

Relevance for Shopify merchants

Any EU-facing merchant selling to consumers is affected. A plain footer link or a generic support form is usually not enough — the law requires a dedicated, structured withdrawal process.
